~1990~
She's made of tomorrow
And her visage is fair
But as sugar in the darkness,
She is going nowhere
The daylight across her face
Keeps her vision impaired
While the sun, and the moon, and the stars
Make up her hair
She is raging against time
Altogether in perfect form
She knows what her name is
And she's wearing her favourite furs
Now she's come 'round the bend
Like she knows my name
All adorned in a garment
Of fortune and fame
She says she's a goddess
Of Earth and she can't be tamed
Yet all the while claims that her salt,
It shall never drain
She is raging against time
Altogether in perfect form
She knows what her name is
She is raging against time
Altogether in perfect form
Wearing her favourite furs,
And she knows what her name is
She is coming of age
Yet ageless, just the same
But only a fool'd waste his time
Playin' her games
She is raging against time
Altogether in perfect form
She knows what her name is
She is raging against time
Altogether in perfect form
Wearing her favourite furs,
And she knows what her name is

I Can't Win
04:00
|
|||
~1989~
There's nothing left, here, for you and me
No homestead, as far as the eye can see
Just bitter, blackened soil,
As we traverse this scorched earth
There's nothing left on the desolate ground
No signs of life; don't make a sound!
Why do you look on, in disbelief?
If you open your eyes, it's easy...
And I tell you I can't win
But at least that's something I can believe in
And I know that it's a sin
But I'm telling you, now
That it's keeping me (A L I V E)
There is nothing left, in this world, for you and me
Nothing left as far as the eye can see
Why do you wallow in the unbelief that what's easy for you
Isn't easy for me?
And I tell you I can't win
But at least that's something I can believe in
And I know that it's a sin
But these atrocities you've been feeding me,
They are keeping me (A L I V E)

~1984~
Can you hear me, call out your name?
Or does it all just sound the same?
Do you remember when we were children?
Or is it a lost cause?
'Cos it smells of soap
It tastes of pain
And loss
Would you believe that I'm calling to you?
But you don't care for nostalgia, do you?
Do you remember when we were children?
Or is it a lost cause?
'Cos it smells of soap
It tastes of pain
And loss
Will you vouch for my senses?
Won't you just take my word for it?
'Cos it smells of soap
It tastes of pain
And loss
Will you vouch for my senses?
Won't you just take my word for it?
'Cos it smells of soap
It tastes of pain
And loss

Danger

~1992~
There's no reason to feel safe
Inside or out on the street
'Cos there's always someone standing there
Dabbling in Philosophy
What a shame that it was all an accident (2x)
There is no way to know what's going down
And no one is to be believed
But to stand on solid ground is pure lunacy
And to fall under scrutiny
What a shame that it was all an accident (3x)
There's a hole in the soul of a great voodoo creole
And he's bleeding all over the oriental rug
Won't someone say something?
What a shame that it was all an accident (4x)

One Fine Day
04:50
|
|||
~1993~
Deep in the heart of the rugged heartland,
There once lived a soul
And deep in the annals of American culture,
There was a spirit of gold
But it gets hard to manage a dying population
Of has-beens and never-weres
So them big boys bought stock in the whipper snappers
And ushered them in with flattering words
And one fine day, up on Capitol Hill
the insurrection began...
They burned the flag, and kicked over statues
(And made themselves at home)
Their wormed their way into the system
(But we should've known)
You used to smoke in your house
(But now you're painting the walls)
They told us they wanted to keep us safe
(Now they tell us that their word is law)
They say they're after our best interest
(But now they've gone too far)
Just listen to the way they talk
(They'll find you wherever you are)
They drink the blood of celebrity
(It's the sacramental wine)
They want it all, so long as it's free
(And if it's free, it's mine!)
Desperate measures in desperate times
How apropos, they're all jesters and mimes
Shooting apathy like it's going out of style
Goin' no place fast, no, you'll be here a while
I try not to get too much in my head (Sometimes I get carried away)
It's all I can do not to envy the dead (But it's harder every day)
I take what I like, I refuse to pay
And waste away under the Golden Gate
Everybody's living, but everybody dies
Nobody lasts long, but, by God, do they try
They're busy proclaiming they want to be free
While they've got us down on our hands and knees
As we drink from the chalice of exploitation
And let the sensation, sweep over the nation
Now in but an instant, my hair turns to gray
It all came to pass on this One Fine Day.

Hip Hip Hooray
05:44
|
|||
~1990~
You always were the one to exclaim
"Hip Hip Hooray"
On any old, dreary day
So long, farewell, so far as I can tell
So far, so bad, and in your infantile way
You smirk and you say "O why not be glad?"
First come, first served,
so much for the first fruits of your labour
Primarily in vain
But it was Hip Hip Hooray
That I heard you say, yesterday
And the day before that

Time Marches On
07:40
|
|||
~1992~
I want to see it all in living colour
Beyond the hazy dimness of the camera's eye
I want to see the soft light of afternoon sun
As it crowns on the skyline of Versailles
I want to set sail out on that ocean, blue
Where the Titanic sank, and the Mayflower swam
And now I'm overlooking the Grand Canyon
Surveying the landscapes where those wild horses ran
I go weightless as I'm standing there
Like I'm the only man in the world,
and what do I care
Oh, I'm a floating apparition;
A passenger on the wings of ancient civilization
And if I imagine living a thousand years,
I catch but a fleeting glimpse before, it disappears
I know it doesn't seem realistically possible
To live just as they lived, and as they breathed
And even now, sometimes, I find it difficult
To ascribe to them their humanity
'Cos painting pictures and projecting films
Tells part of the story, but not the whole
And should imagination ever fail,
I'll just run in reverse, into those days of old
I go weightless as I'm standing there
Like I'm the only man in the world,
and what do I care
Oh, I'm a floating apparition;
A passenger on the wings of ancient civilization
And if I imagine living a thousand years,
I catch but a fleeting glimpse before, it disappear
And should you ever need to find me, exactly where I am,
Be it Constantinople or the Kingdom of Siam,
Just look over your shoulder, or just turn the page
'Cos I'm the poster child of the forgotten age
(Forgotten age) It's going away
It will never be the same
Time; it's far too tangible
It wears us thin; it makes us old
Time; it exists in linear space
It drags us across the Earth; it etches lines into our face
Time; it's not on our side
Nobody takes us as far from home as time does
Time; takes no prisoners
But even still, it functions as our master

The Last Thing I Said
03:00
|
|||
~1990~
And there is something to be said
For the way that things used to be
'Cos it's getting quite tricky, these days
To keep my head above water, with you
And every little thing you do makes me never want to speak, again
But I swore on my life I would, to you
O what it is to be a loyal friend
And they'll make a fool of me, yet
Or better yet, I'll turn up dead
It was the last thing I said
That all man has parts of himself he ought not indulge
But perhaps your transgressions, you just ought not divulge
'Cos there's something quite dangerous
About the way you call me a friend
But then you spit it all back out, in the end
'Cos you just don't seem to care, at all
No, you don't seem to care, at all
And they'll make a fool of me, yet
Or better yet, I'll turn up dead
'Cos when I'm around, it's just not quite the same
But I've not got fifteen bucks to my name, anyway
No when I'm around, it's not the same, is it, now?
It was the last thing I said
(Or better, yet I'll turn up dead)

~1989~
I've been taken a trip, across the dust
The slat of the Earth; the color of rust
And it's all too familiar, but I don't have to wonder why
And you know, I don't know what to call this place
But I'll keep turning around; I'll keep running the race
Have I lost my mind? Or am I just reaching too high?
'Cos one of these days, I'll go back
To the house or the home that made me
The man that I am, but I'd better not make any plans
I've set out on foot; now I'm walking about
I cover every inch of the world, outside
And I'm by myself, again
I remember washing my hands,
Watching the water turn black as it hit the sand
Oh me, oh my, it's strange what we do recall
(I'm surprised that I even remember, at all)
But one of these days, I'll go back
To the house or the home that made me
The man that I am, but I'd better not make any plans
And one of these days I'll go back
To the landscape that grew me up, from the humble ground
I am my circumstances, and I'm formed by the sound
One of these days, I'll go back
To the house or the home that made me
The man that I am, but I know I shouldn't make any plans
And one of these days I'll go back
To the landscape that grew me up, from the humble ground
I am fortified by circumstance and formed by the sound

Eldest Friend
06:06
|
|||
~1997~
And lo, the world is fading, fading darker, now
And yes, the sun is permanently going down
Still, here I am, wading around in the deep end of my sorrow
And knowing full well, there will be no tomorrow
If she wants to fade away, why doesn't she say it?
If she wants to be let go, why doesn't she let us know?
But until we meet again, you'll always be the eldest friend.
And so it's only getting harder to look down from here
At the feeble framework of the shell that once housed her
But now, I remember all that carried
And imagine your burdens left behind
Buried within the Earth
If she wants to fade away, why doesn't she say it?
If she wants to be let go, why doesn't she let us know?
'Cos I remember every word you said,
But until we meet again, you'll always be the eldest friend.
If she wants to fade away, why doesn't she say it?
If she wants to be let go, why doesn't she let us know?
And I know that if you're set free, you'll be set apart from me
But that's just the price I pay to see you another day
'Cos you'll be there in a better way
And I will be with you, to stay
And I remember every word you said
When I am lying awake, in my but
But until we meet again, you'll always be the eldest friend.

Nothin' But a Memory
05:24
|
|||
~1992~
When the kids get home from school, today
Remind them that they still have time to play
'Cos it's easy to forget
And when they come to you, all in tears
Remind them of the better years
"You're not a grown-up, yet"
And it gets easier, easier, easier
(To forget)
When the trivial things fall apart
Life becomes a work of art
From beginning to the end
Don't squander simple pleasures, child
Youth is a gift, a joyous smile
And you don't have many left
But it gets easier, easier, easier
(To forget)
You made it all scared, to me
But what am I supposed to do
Now that it's nothin' but a memory..?
